What this work actually pays

42,654 awarded contracts, grouped by the government that awarded them and by trade, with the median and the middle half of the range. Federal award databases only record federal spending — city, county and school district work doesn't appear in them, which is exactly the work most small contractors live on.

How to use these numbers

The median tells you what a typical job in that market is worth; the 25th and 75th percentiles tell you whether the market is tight or spread wide. If a solicitation you're looking at sits well above the 75th percentile for its trade and state, the bonding and insurance asked for will usually scale with it — which is worth knowing before you spend a week on the estimate.
